Smashbox ON THE ROCKS Review

(L-R: Legendary, Azalea, Gilt, Jewel, Pout)

Today's review is on the Smashbox On The Rocks lip gloss set that came out during the 2014 Holiday season. I got this as a present from my aunt and it was perfect as I've recently started loving my lip products.

The box comes with 5 pigmented Be Legendary lip glosses that smell slightly vanilla-y and have a gorgeous shine to them. There are two non-shimmery colours (Legendary and Azalea) and three high shimmer ones (Gilt, Jewel, and Pout). The glosses aren't as sticky as the Stila Lip Glazes which means that they don't last as long on the lips, but I don't mind because of how fuss free they are to apply.

The applicator was a new one for me; it's rather flat as opposed to the typical doe foot you get with lip glosses. I found it took a bit of getting used to as it can get tricky working around your cupid's bow. What I also found with the applicator was that you would get quite a harsh line the edges of your lips that has a bit more gloss. I remedy this by just taking a cotton bud (or your pinky finger) and slightly running it along the edges.

In terms of the colour range of the set, you have two colours that I think would be wearable in the Summer time and the rest, because of the shimmer, in the cooler months. The shade Azalea actually reminds me of the Revlon Moisture Stain in Barcelona Nights. The glosses can be work on top of a lipstick or lip liner but they are certainly pigmented enough to be worn on its own. Legendary gave a cherry stained look and Pout looks great over a lip liner, adding just a touch of creaminess to it.

These glosses are perfect for just popping into your bag and I actually prefer them to the Stila Lip Glazes in terms of comfort. I find the Lip Glazes could just get very heavy on the lips and it was all too easy for my hair to get stuck on it.

Although this was a limited edition holiday set, Smashbox does sell their Be Legendary lip glosses individually. The colours available for purchase are Pout, Azalea, and Legendary. Sugar Cane could be similar to Jewel and Illume similar to Gilt.

Now time to make my way through my growing lippie collection…

  1. That is such a lovely gift to receive! I like the shade Legendary and Azalea and wow, they are very pigmented for a lip gloss. Great review!

  2. Do you find these sticky? Looks like a great range of colours.

    1. I would say they're a bit tacky rather than sticky. There's definitely some slip to it, but not as much as, say, the Clarins Instant Light Lip Perfectors (which I consider quite balmy). It's certainly comfortable to wear but they wouldn't last very long.
